Raleigh Rescue Mission Responds to Increased Need for Shelter with Upcoming Freezing Temperatures

RALEIGH, N.C.–– November has brought with it extremely frigid temperatures along with an increased demand for our shelter services. The Triangle is bracing for temperatures to drop below freezing over the next several nights.

When overnight temperatures are forecasted to dip below 38 degrees with precipitation or 32 degrees, Raleigh Rescue Mission implements a “White Flag” program, a Wake County initiative to shelter as many people as possible during extreme temperatures. Additionally, the Mission will provide aid for unsheltered residents experiencing frostbite or other weather related challenges by bringing them inside to warm up and referring them for medical help if needed.

Raleigh Rescue Mission’s President/CEO, John Luckett explains, “For many years we have partnered with other agencies in Wake County to shelter men, women and children during extreme weather conditions. We are in the process of expanding our Emergency Overnight Services to accommodate an additional 24 women and children in preparation for the upcoming cold winter nights.”

For those interested in helping, we are in most need of the following items:

  • Men’s, women’s and children’s coats (adult XL or larger coats most needed)
  • Toboggan-style knit hats
  • Thermal Gloves
  • Scarves
  • Thermal socks
  • Hand Warmers
  • Full Sized Blankets
  • Sleeping bags
